Flooring 101: Can I install it myself or do I need multiple people?
Taking a DIY approach to installing new floors can be extremely gratifying, but depending on the type of flooring you choose you may need some help. Here is a brief look at a few common types of floors and whether or not you are likely to need help installing them.
Laminate
Few types of flooring are easier to install by yourself than laminate. The pieces of laminate are short and light making them easy to handle and, unlike some other types of flooring, you can take breaks without worrying about the end result being compromised.
Tiles
While there is a definite art to tiling a floor, if you aren’t pressed for time you can certainly do this job yourself. DIY tiling guides are extremely easy to find and follow and all of the supplies you will need are relatively easy to work with. In fact, if you are tiling a small room, such as a laundry or bathroom, you are better off doing this job alone as an extra person will likely just get in the way.
Hardwood
Few DIY jobs are as gratifying as installing your own hardwood floor, although you will need to be prepared for hard work. Even just moving those boards around can be challenging, because apart from being quite long they often come in heavy bundles, so either get some help or pace yourself. Installing a hardwood floor alone can also take several days from start to finish, so only take on this big job solo if you are in no rush.
Carpet
Unless you are considering carpet tiles, installing carpet on your own is rather difficult, especially if you want it to look good. Apart from it being a struggle to move a heavy roll of carpet on your own, it can be tough to ensure your carpet is laid evenly when you are doing it alone. Do yourself a favor and get some help.
Cork
Cork flooring is the perfect candidate for a solo DIY job, as the materials are small, light and can be installed in stages without undermining the end result. While you will certainly need to take your time and do plenty of research, if you can follow instructions you can definitely install cork floors alone.
Concrete
If you care at all about how your concrete floors will look this isn’t a job that you want to take on alone. Apart from being a physically demanding job, you will have only a small window of time before it sets to ensure it is smooth, making this a job best done with multiple pairs of hands.
Taking a solo DIY approach to any job is only ever wise if you can do the job well; otherwise, get some help or call in the professionals.
